3. Data processing in the FingerSpan app

Drawing and measuring

The line you draw and its distance are calculated and displayed entirely on your device. Nothing about an in-progress measurement is transmitted anywhere.

Location

FingerSpan requests location permission only after you explicitly tap the location button. Once permission is granted, Apple's MapKit may use your location while the map is visible in the foreground to show your position as a dot and center the map on it. While location tracking is active, the map follows your position; compass mode also follows your direction. FingerSpan never uses your location in the background and does not store it. FingerSpan does not send precise location data to a map service as a separate data field. When the map is loaded, however, the selected map provider necessarily receives the requested map area, which may reveal an approximate location.

Map content (Apple Maps and OpenStreetMap)

FingerSpan uses Apple's MapKit as its map engine. With the Standard, Satellite, and Hybrid map styles, map content and place information are loaded directly from Apple. When you use place search, the text you enter is also sent to Apple to provide search suggestions and results. This involves communication between your device and Apple and is governed by Apple's Privacy Policy. We have no visibility into that traffic and FingerSpan does not retain your search terms.

FingerSpan Premium also offers an OpenStreetMap style. When selected, the app loads the currently visible raster map tiles directly from tile.openstreetmap.org, a service operated by the OpenStreetMap Foundation (OSMF), over encrypted HTTPS connections. This produces technical access records that may include the IP address, browser or app and device type, operating system, time of access, and requested tile paths (map area and zoom level). Tile coordinates may reveal the approximate area currently being viewed. Tiles are delivered through a global cache network, with the actual server selected dynamically. FingerSpan requests only tiles for the map being viewed interactively and retains them in the device cache in accordance with the service's requirements. If the public OpenStreetMap tile service is unavailable or repeatedly returns errors, FingerSpan automatically switches the current map session to the Stadia Outdoors style provided by the fallback provider Stadia Maps, Inc., 1690 Watertower Place, Ste 100 #216, East Lansing, MI 48823, USA. FingerSpan uses Stadia Maps' EU endpoint. This likewise involves processing the IP address, request time, technical request information, and identifiers of the requested map tiles. The FingerSpan API key identifies the app, not an individual FingerSpan account. Because Stadia Maps is based in the United States, data may be processed outside the European Economic Area; the provider states that it relies in particular on the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses. Processing by the map service in use is necessary to provide the map style explicitly selected by the user reliably (Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR) and also serves our legitimate interest in offering a readable and resilient map (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR).

Snap to paths (Magnet)

When you tap Magnet, FingerSpan sends a small set of sampled points from your line — not the full route — first to Apple Maps to look for a matching walking path. If no suitable match is found nearby, the same sampled points are sent as a fallback to Stadia Maps' EU endpoint, a routing service built on OpenStreetMap data. These points describe a geographic route and may therefore be personal data depending on the route. The IP address, request time, and technical connection information are also processed. This only happens when you actively tap Magnet; FingerSpan does not retain the response permanently. The legal basis is performance of the feature explicitly requested by the user (Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR).

Saved measurements (Premium)

With FingerSpan Premium, measurements you explicitly choose to save (name, coordinates, distance, and date) are stored on your device, protected by iOS file protection. If iCloud sync is enabled, the app also stores these measurements in its private CloudKit database in your Apple iCloud account and keeps them synchronized across your devices. CloudKit encrypts the data in transit and on Apple's servers; route geometry is stored as an encrypted CloudKit asset and sensitive record fields use CloudKit encryption. FingerSpan's developer does not receive your measurements and has no account through which to access them.

On a new installation, iCloud sync is enabled by default and can be turned off in the app. Users upgrading from a version that stored measurements only locally are asked before any existing measurement is uploaded. When sync is off, new changes remain on that device. Turning sync off does not by itself remove data already stored in iCloud; the app provides a separate action for that purpose. Processing is necessary to provide the sync feature selected by the user (Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR).

In-app purchases

FingerSpan Premium is a one-time, non-subscription purchase processed exclusively through Apple's App Store (StoreKit). Payment and account data are handled solely by Apple under its own privacy policy. We never receive payment data.

Analytics, advertising, and tracking

FingerSpan contains no third-party analytics, tracking, or advertising SDKs. There is no user tracking, profiling, or usage analysis.

Deletion

Individual saved measurements can be deleted at any time within the app; with sync enabled, deletion is propagated to synchronized devices. The app also provides a data export and an action that deletes all FingerSpan measurement data from iCloud while retaining the local copy. Uninstalling FingerSpan removes its local data, but does not automatically delete data already stored in the user's iCloud account.

4. Data processing when visiting this website

This website (fingerspan.app) is a purely static site with no cookies, tracking scripts, or contact forms. It is hosted by ALL-INKL.COM - Neue Medien Münnich, Hauptstraße 68, 02742 Friedersdorf, Germany. When you visit this site, ALL-INKL.COM automatically processes technical access data (e.g. IP address, date, time, page requested, browser used, referring URL) in server log files, as is technically standard for any web server. This data is used solely for operating and securing the site (e.g. detecting abuse) and troubleshooting, and is not combined with any other data source. A data processing agreement under Art. 28 GDPR is in place with ALL-INKL.COM. Details on ALL-INKL.COM's own processing are available in its privacy information.

This website does not use cookies or comparable tracking technologies.
